The Mets showed interest in Teoscar Hernández before the free-agent outfielder re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this week. According to Tim Healey of Newsday, the Mets offered Hernández a two-year contract before he went back to the Dodgers for three years and $66 million.
The free-agent push was another example of New York looking for an additional veteran bat. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Mets reached out to Joc Pederson before he signed a multi-year deal with the Texas Rangers.
The difference in this case was that Hernández would likely have taken up a corner outfield spot, pushing Brandon Nimmo to center. In the past, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has prioritized the importance of defense up the middle, with the acquisitions of Harrison Bader, Tyrone Taylor, and Jose Siri during his tenure with the team.
The attention will now turn back to Pete Alonso to fulfill the need to further protect Juan Soto in the lineup. According to a New York Post report earlier this week, “there is said to be a sizable gap in talks” between the Mets and their slugging first baseman.
