A frustrating afternoon ended in defeat for the Spiders as a Brian Graham brace gave Partick Thistle all 3 points.
Queen’s ended the calendar year at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill with Head Coach Callum Davidson sticking with the same starting 11 as last time out, with Nikola Ujdur fit enough for a place on the bench.
Queen’s looked to have strong claims for a penalty in the 1st minute as a through ball found Jack Turner bearing down on goal. Turner fell as a last ditch tackle came in, however referee Lloyd Wilson waved way claims for a penalty.
The hosts had the better of the play in the opening 15 minutes or so as the Spiders struggled to get a foothold in the game. During that early period, Thistle took the lead in the 7th minute. Josh Scott was adjudged to have fouled a Thistle forward at the right-hand corner of the penalty box. Kyle Turner’s free kick struck Cal Ferrie’s left hand post, however the rebound fell kindly to Brian Graham who knocked home from 6 yards.
Queen’s came more into the game and forced a number of corners in quick succession without overly troubling Myles Roberts in the Thistle goal. With 22 minutes on the clock, a shot from Jack Turner forced the Thistle keeper into a smart save. The equaliser wasn’t long coming as a run from Mauchin down the right wing whose pass found Dom Thomas at the edge of the box and the Queen’s skipper fired a powerful shot into the top corner of the net. All square after 26 minutes.
As had been highlight pre-match, all sides of the stadium gave a rousing round of applause in the 36th minute to mark the passing of Thistle fan Stuart Bryson who passed away recently.
Both sides had half chances before the break but the half ended one a piece.
Half time: Partick Thistle 1 Queen’s Park 1
Just as in the opening stages of the 1st half, the 2nd period burst to life as Thistle regained the lead 2 minutes after the break. The lively Logan Chalmers wriggled his away towards the Queen’s goal on the byline before firing off a shot which appeared to take a deflection before hitting the bar and landing at the feet of that man Brian Graham, who bundled the ball over the line from close range.
Queen’s went straight onto the attack, with Dom Thomas firing over before another Queen’s attack finished with a Jack Thomson strike from the edge of the box hitting a post before being scrambled clear.
Fitzpatrick and Chalmers continued to torment the Queen’s defence, with a couple of corners forcing good defensive play from the Spiders to stop Thistle extending their lead.
As the play became more stretched, a flurry of bookings saw referee Wilson flash yellow cards to Queen’s Jack Turner and Jack Thomson, and to Bannigan and Robinson for The Jags.
Queen’s finished the game strongly, forcing several corners putting the home defence under pressure, however a equaliser wouldn’t come and Thistle saw the game out to claim a 2-1 win.
