ST. MARY PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- St. Mary Parish Sheriff Gary Driskell wants to remind people where and when fireworks can be used as the new year approaches.
According to the parish ordinance, fireworks are only approved in unincorporated areas of the parish such as Amelia, Bayou Vista, Calumet, and Four Corners.
The designated times they can be popped are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. from now until Jan.1.
Driskell wants everyone to be mindful of their neighbors while celebrating New Year's.
"There is really a lot of people live in certain areas as unincorporated areas, and it keeps them up at night and different things. And we get those calls. But we'll do our best to enforce those laws. And like I said, just stay courteous to your neighbors," the sheriff said.
While everyone should be considerate to their neighbors, they should still be aware of the dangers fireworks can bring.
"You have your hazards as far as you know, you know some of these fireworks or they're bottle rockets or their missiles or whatever. You got to be careful about the houses in the area. It can easily catch a house on fire. You're looking at injuries and death as far as that goes, if people are not aware."
