Legendary Sports Broadcaster Greg Gumbel Dies at 78 Following Cancer Battle
The legendary sports broadcaster Greg Gumbel has died at the age of 78.
Gumbel, who worked in sports broadcasting for over 50 years, passed away following a long battle with cancer.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father and husband, Greg Gumbel,” his family said in a joint statement released by CBS Sports.
“He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer.”
“Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity.”

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Gumbel was a trailblazing sportscaster who became one of the most respected voices in American sports broadcasting.
Over the course of his career, Gumbel worked for major networks including CBS, NBC, and ESPN, covering a wide array of sports.
He was best renowned for his roles in NFL and NCAA basketball coverage, hosting marquee events such as the Super Bowl and the NCAA Final Four.
Gumbel made history in 2001 as the first African-American broadcaster to call play-by-play for a U.S. major sports championship during Super Bowl XXXV.
