On Day 2 of Boxing Day Test against Australia, Indian young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal got dismissed after scoring 82 runs after he got in a mix-up with star batter Virat Kohli. Australia found an important breakthrough at a crucial point in the game when the team broke the 102-run partnership between Virat and Jaiswal.
During 41st over, Yashasvi Jaiswal got sent a full-length ball towards the off-stump, which he sent towards Pat Cummins at the mid-on and went for a run almost immediately. At the non-striker’s side, Virat Kohli stood firm, as he shouted to not take the single.
It was, however, too late as Jaiswal had already reached the other side. Although the direct shot by Cummins went over the striker’s stumps, wicketkeeper Alex Carey took the ball and broke the stumps and completed the run-out.
Steve Smith spoke about Kohli might have chance of played a big knock since he appeared to be in great place. He also addressed the mix-up between Kohli and Jaiswal that opened up the chance for Australia to find a breakthrough.
“He (Kohli) was really disciplined today, he was leaving nicely, making the bowlers come to him a bit more and scoring well through the leg side and when we went short. So, yeah, I thought we were in for a bit of a masterclass there,” Smith said in the post-day press conference.
“Looks like Jaiswal called yes, ran, and Virat sent him back. Simple as that. Yeah, I didn’t see much more than that. It was obviously a really good partnership to break that one. And then obviously get the two more wickets. It was a huge last hour for us. So, yeah, that was a big play in the context of the day, I suppose,” Smith added.
It was a disastrous moment for India as it came just 20 minutes before the stumps were called. Jaiswal and Kohli took India’s innings from a mere score of 51/2 to 153/2. Jaiswal scored 82 runs off 117 balls, which included 11 fours and a six. He missed a century after such a fantastic knock, which is definitely disappointing.
