Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel has broken down the unfortunate mix-up between Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal, which saw the latter getting dismissed with a run-out on the 4th Day against Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Parthiv feels that Jaiswal was at fault since the run-out happened only because he unnecessarily went for a single.
Jaiswal was completely settled on the crease until the horrible mix-up. His wicket caused a break in the momentum of Indian batters, as they saw a collapse in the batting lineup after him.
This happened in the 41st over, when Jaiswal confidently hit the ball to mid-on and went in for a single. Kohli, however, did not seem comfortable in taking the run as he had his focus on the ball. This caused in a miscommunication, ultimately resulting in Jaiswal’s run-out.
Kohli had his focus on the ball while he stayed close to the crease as Jaiswal kept running. Cummins was quick to retrieve the ball and tried a direct hit at the striker’s side, which missed. Alex Carey quickly took the ball and completed the run-out.
Parthiv Patel talked about the massive result of this run-out on the match. He pointed out how India were in a strong position with both Kohli and Jaiswal batting with complete confidence.
“The way India started the session, the way the game was going on for the last half an hour there were about 25 minutes left till then, India was in full control. Especially the way the runs were coming, the speed with which the runs were coming. Everything was going in India’s favour. There was a big question on Virat Kohli related to outside off stump, he was giving a lot of answers,” Parthiv said on a Cricbuzz show.
“He was showing a lot of patience, was forcing Australia to bowl at him. Yashasvi Jaiswal was also playing his game. The way he plays his game, he was playing his game but the unfortunate run out from where the whole game changed. The situation changed after that run-out,” he added.

Parthiv further went on to blame this mix-up to Jaiswal. He stated that since the fielder was so close, Kohli would not have expected Jaiswal’s call for a single. Patel also pointed that even in the case they had taken a single, there would have been a high risk of Kohli being run out at striker’s end.
“If we go to the cricketing fundamentals if the ball is behind you, then the call is of striker, and here the call was of Yashasvi Jaiswal, there is no doubt in that. But the mid-on was standing in front of Virat Kohli. So I don’t think Virat Kohli was expecting that by hitting here Yashasvi Jaiswal will call for a run. So the mistake I think in my opinion Yashasvi Jaiswal made a mistake; he looked in a hurry.”
“There was no need for that. It was such a call. If Virat Kohli had run, then maybe there would have been chances of running out at his end. And the kind of game was going on, the kind of situation that was, there was no need to take that one run because the boundaries were coming easily,” Parthiv concluded.
This run-out of Jaiswal gave rise to a collapse in batting lineup by the time Day 2 was coming towards its end. India ended the day at 164/5 The start of the innings was good, but the later order saw a batting collapse.
