In December, the pro-life organization Heartbeat International awarded approximately $50,000 to U.S. pregnancy centers that were affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton this fall.
In late September, Hurricane Helene hit Florida, and on this storm’s heels in early October, Hurricane Milton followed in destructive torrents. Affected states include Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. To support impacted pro-life pregnancy centers – some of which had to cancel fundraisers for themselves due to the storms – Heartbeat International has donated to centers in each of these states, according to a Dec. 20 Pregnancy Help News article.

In October, Heartbeat International raised the funds through the “HALO,” or “Helping Affiliated Life-affirming Organizations,” initiative. All of the proceeds were from pregnancy centers, which donated to this fund to support other centers in need. Following direct communication with affected centers, Heartbeat distributed funds, which were received this month, as needed.
“The remarkable outpouring of generosity donated to and distributed through the HALO fund, exemplifies the strength of our shared mission and the unwavering commitment to life-affirming care, even in the face of adversity,” said Heartbeat International Vice President of Ministry Services Tracie Shellhouse in the article. “The pregnancy help community that will continue to shine brightly through any storm.”
Pro-life pregnancy centers are nonprofit organizations where volunteers and employees provide expectant mothers with life-affirming support, often offering material resources and parenting classes. The centers counsel women facing crisis pregnancies and provide them with empowering help as they prepare to welcome their children.
Last December, a mother of two shared in a powerful op-ed how a Boston-based pregnancy center has continued, throughout several years, to support her family. In 2022, a gesture that the center made during Christmastime – sending a gift that her sons had wanted – was especially meaningful, Marie Smith shared.
“For a mother, there’s nothing quite as emotional as watching your child open his first present ever on Christmas morning, when just days prior you thought you wouldn’t be able to provide one,” wrote Smith. “I owe it all to my local pregnancy resource center.”
