The Ministry of Public Works has announced that the first rail transit shipment from China to Afghanistan, consisting of 1,000 tons of steel coils, has arrived at the Rosanak station in Herat province via Iran’s rail network.
Mohammad Ashraf Haqshanas, the spokesperson for the ministry, shared a video on his X/Twitter account, stating that the shipment started its journey from China and, after arriving at the port of Bandar Abbas, it continued its route via Iran’s rail network to Afghanistan.
Haqshanas described the transfer of the cargo as an important step in developing Afghanistan’s transit connections and linking the country to international waterways. He also emphasized that this marks significant progress in regional transportation and transit development.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Public Works has accelerated the expansion of the country’s railway system and aims to create new opportunities for Afghanistan’s economy through the growth and development of this sector.
It should also be mentioned that rail transportation between China and Afghanistan began in 2016, with Afghanistan connecting to China’s rail network through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. However, this rail link had been temporarily suspended for some time.
The arrival of this first significant rail shipment from China underscores the potential for strengthening Afghanistan’s role as a regional transit hub. It reflects a growing partnership between Afghanistan and China, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and trade.
Looking ahead, the expansion of Afghanistan’s railway network could provide a much-needed boost to the country’s economic development, opening new avenues for trade and regional cooperation. The continued collaboration with neighboring countries like Iran, Uzbekistan, and China may help stabilize and modernize Afghanistan’s transportation infrastructure, further integrating it into global supply chains.
