Pakistani media reports have announced the passing of Rustam Shah Mohmand, the former ambassador of Pakistan to Afghanistan.
Faisal Karim Kundi, the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, confirmed the news of Mr. Mohmand’s death with deep regret on Friday, December 27.
The funeral ceremony for Mr. Mohmand is scheduled to take place today in Peshawar.
Rustam Shah Mohmand was a distinguished diplomat and expert who served as Pakistan’s ambassador to Afghanistan.
In the early 2000s, at the start of Hamid Karzai’s government, he was appointed as Pakistan’s first ambassador to Kabul.
After completing his diplomatic mission, Mohmand continued his work as an analyst and expert on Afghanistan and regional affairs. He frequently shared his insights on regional policies, particularly on the relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan, through interviews and articles.
Rustam Shah Mohmand’s passing marks the end of an era for Pakistan’s diplomatic community, particularly in relation to its dealings with Afghanistan. His work as a diplomat and his contributions as a regional analyst shaped much of the discourse on Pakistan-Afghanistan relations during a critical period.
His death is not only a loss to Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts but also to the broader understanding of South Asian geopolitics. As tensions and opportunities between Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to evolve, his perspectives and expertise on these issues will be remembered and missed.
