Australia debutant Sam Konstas showed immense maturity and played a fine innings on the first day of the Melbourne Test to put India on the backfoot. The 19-year-old batter played some brilliant T20esque shots early in the innings, especially targeting pacer Jasprit Bumrah.
Seeing Konstas bat in 6th gear, India’s star cricketer Virat Kohli looked to get on his nerves in the middle. During the first session, Kohli seemed to give Konstas a shoulder push, aiming to break the batter’s concentration.
Kohli and Konstas’ altercation in the middle became a heated affair, prompting other players and umpires to intervene. This move however, seemed to backfire on Kohli and the Indian team as the teenage batter continued playing in his rhythm and soon brought up his maiden half-century.
Meanwhile, Konstas became the fourth youngest Australian player to make his Test debut for the Baggy Greens. The batter received the cap from former Australia skipper at the age of 19 years and 85 days.
Konstas featured for the Prime Minister’s XI that took on India ahead in a practice match ahead of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. He came into the limelight in the ongoing Sheffield Shield season, scoring 471 runs in just 5 matches at an average of 58.87, including two centuries and a fifty, with a best score of 152.
