Decision Sciences International Corporation (DSIC) and KoBold Metals Company have initiated a multi-phase project for the design, development and deployment of a new Charged Particle (Muon) tomography solution for the mineral exploration and mining industry.
The companies have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see DSIC leverage its proprietary expertise to design and develop a so-called Muography Mining Industry Solution that will be field-deployed with KoBold.
DSIC’s Discovery system uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies combined with advanced physics to enable the company’s Muon tomography technology. The technology is capable of locating and identifying contraband, anomalies, threats and human beings smuggled within cargo and vehicles at seaports, land borders and at military and critical infrastructure sites.
DSIC’s unique data stream facilitates a more efficient and effective decision-making process, and is now being adapted to suit the mineral exploration and mining industries.
“Our talented team is looking forward to continuing to collaborate with KoBold to leverage DSIC’s unique and robust charged particle tomography expertise, along with the myriad of lessons learned from the development and sale of its Discovery system into the security, nuclear energy and infrastructure and tunnelling markets,” said Stuart Rabin, chairman of Decision Sciences. “To bring to the mineral exploration and mining industry DSIC’s unrivalled IP portfolio, know-how, operational and field experience as the clear leader in the merging muon tomography market. We are very pleased to partner with KoBold to advance the frontier of exploration technology with DSIC’s unique AI/ML, advanced physics data aggregation and novel hardware, to contribute to the important energy transition mission.”
The Muography Mining Industry Solution will enable KoBold to harness new and unique data sources as a key input for its subsurface models of mineral deposits. The data generated will enable the reconstruction of underground density signatures, enhance the company’s decision-making process, and accelerate the development of mineral resources.
“Muon imaging is a powerful technique that allows us to peer deep beneath the earth’s surface and see underground ore deposits in new and innovative ways,” said Kurt House, KoBold’s CEO. “We are pleased to partner with DSIC to adapt their leading muon imaging capabilities to fit the mineral exploration and mining industry.”
DSIC’s CEO, Dwight Johnson, added: “As the global demand grows for critical and rare minerals, DSIC’s Muography Mining Industry Solution is ideally suited to finding, mapping and extending new ore deposits around the world. This effort by DSIC represents yet another application for our cutting-edge charged particle (muon) tomography technology while applying significant AI/ML capabilities and solutions to age old problems in the mineral exploration and mining sector.”
