Iranian media have reported that a landmine explosion in the Kalgan border area in eastern Iran has claimed the lives of two Afghan refugees.
According to the human rights organization “HalVash,” the incident occurred early Friday morning when the landmine, allegedly planted by Iranian border forces, detonated, killing the two refugees.
The report states that a group of Afghan refugees was attempting to cross into Iran through the Kalgan border when the explosion occurred. This is not the first time Afghan refugees have fallen victim to landmines planted by Iranian border guards.
In one of the deadliest incidents of this kind, a group of about 400 Afghan refugees faced a landmine explosion and gunfire in the Kalgan border area of Saravan district, Iran, on October 16 this year.
Iran has repeatedly urged Afghan refugees to enter the country legally while continuing to enforce mass deportations in recent years. Despite these measures, Iran remains a primary destination for Afghan refugees, who travel there for work, visiting family, or as part of migration routes to Europe.
Afghan refugees in Iran face numerous challenges, including harsh border conditions, limited access to legal documentation, and instances of violence such as landmine explosions. Many refugees are compelled to work in exploitative conditions to survive, while others struggle with restricted access to healthcare and education.
Meanwhile, in Pakistan, Afghan refugees face discrimination, lack of legal protection, and the constant threat of deportation. Their plight is further exacerbated by the deteriorating security situation and strained resources in host communities. Addressing the needs of Afghan refugees requires urgent international attention and collaborative solutions to ensure their safety and dignity.
