Preps of the week: Perennial powers battle it out in girls soccer

Girls soccer took center stage this past week as the perennial top five teams in the county were involved in non-league contests against each other.

Marin Catholic defeated Branson on a late winner and Marin Academy defeated Redwood on Tuesday. Tam then got involved at the University Invitational and defeated Marin Academy on Friday.

The boys soccer action was highlighted by a non-league clash that saw Archie Williams put six past San Rafael.

Basketball tournament season continued as Marin Catholic took second at the Casa Grande tournament and San Marin took third. Branson also had a solid showing at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas.

Savannah Browne, Marin Catholic girls soccer

Browne played an integral role in both goals as MC won 2-1 on Tuesday to hand Branson its first loss of the season. Browne took a free kick early in the second half which Sloane Carey headed into the back of the net to give MC a 1-0 lead. Browne had another free kick in second-half stoppage time — this one from near midfield — and ended up scoring on it as Siena White made a move to play the ball, drawing the keeper out of position so the shot could find its way into the net for the game winner.

Lauren Willard, Tam girls soccer

The Red-tailed Hawks’ high-scoring sophomore had a strong weekend as Tam won one and tied one at the University Invitational. Willard scored on a penalty kick in a 2-1 win on Friday as Tam became the first team to defeat Marin Academy this season. Willard assisted both goals — to Addie Covey and Hana Leach, respectively — as Tam settled for a 2-2 draw against Bullard (Fresno) on Saturday.

Sadie Goodenough, Marin Academy girls soccer

Goodenough scored both goals for Marin Academy as the Wildcats defeated Redwood 2-1 on Tuesday. Goodenough was in the right place at the right time to score MA’s first goal, following up a shot by Raya Leikin that was initially saved by Redwood’s goalie. Goodenough doubled MA’s advantage shortly before half following an assist from her younger sister, Reese.

Marco Caruso, Tam boys soccer

The freshman had a huge weekend at the University Invitational, helping guide Tam to a pair of wins. Caruso scored twice in a 3-0 win against Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday then found the back of the net two more times in a 4-0 win against Newark Memorial on Saturday.

Ryder Higgins Jones, San Rafael soccer

Higgins Jones scored four goals last week as San Rafael picked up a pair of victories — 4-0 against Bay School on Monday and 6-0 against Mt. Diablo on Saturday. Higgins Jones scored a brace in each game.

Julia Myerberg, Branson girls soccer

Myerberg set up three goals and added one of her own as Branson rolled to a 5-0 win against San Marin on Thursday. Myerberg had three assists inside an eight-minute span in the first half, setting up goals by Anya Sridharan, Ally Hsieh, and Giselle Hernandez. Myerberg made it 4-0 in the 61st minute, scoring off an assist from Hsieh.

Jordan Oliver-Roa and Jake Morrison, Archie Williams boys soccer

The Peregrine Falcons played just one game this past week but put together an impressive 6-1 non-league win against San Rafael on Saturday. Oliver-Roa scored twice for Archie Williams. Morrison also had a goal and added two assists.

Josie Quinby, Terra Linda girls soccer

Quinby registered a hat trick in TL’s only game of the week, a 6-0 victory against Novato on Friday.

Alexander Berkowitz, Redwood boys wrestling

Berkowitz entered the Bill Martel Invitational at Northgate High on Saturday as the top seed in the 165-pound bracket. Berkowitz lived up to that billing, going 5-0 to take first place.

Quincy Dean, San Marin girls basketball

Dean put together one of the more impressive stat lines of the season, piling up 29 points, eight rebounds, and seven steals as the Mustangs blasted Vallejo 51-9 on Saturday. Dean also had 10 points as San Marin took down Rodriguez 46-26 on Friday.

Izzy McFadden, Marin Catholic girls basketball

McFadden scored a game-high 21 points as the Wildcats thumped Montgomery 61-32 on Friday. Montgomery had previously beaten both San Domenico and Branson this season.

Joe Hammond and Henry Dibble, Marin Catholic boys basketball

Both players received all-tournament honors as the Wildcats battled their way to the championship game of the Casa Grande tournament but lost 40-39 in the final seconds against Urban. Hammond had his best game in the first round, hitting a shot at the buzzer to force overtime in a 71-62 win against Montgomery on Thursday. Hammond had 26 points, four steals, three assists, and three rebounds in that game while Dibble added 14 points. Hammond had 13 more points and six assists in a 55-47 semifinal win against San Marin on Friday. Dibble scored 10 points and had nine rebounds against the Mustangs. Dibble had 12 points and six rebounds against Urban.

J.D. Rhodes and Rio Seiler, San Marin boys basketball

The Mustangs also competed at the Casa Grande tournament, defeating the hosts 72-62 on Saturday to take third place. Rhodes and Seiler were both all-tournament selections. Rhodes scored 20 points against Casa Grande. Seiler scored 16 points in a 74-49 win against Windsor and scored 17 against Casa Grande.

NJ Gray and Chase Robertson, Branson boys basketball

Gray and Robertson had strong weeks as the Bulls went 2-2 at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas last week. Gray scored 85 points across the four games with his best performance coming with a 33-point, 13-rebound, five-assist stat line against Centennial of Idaho. Robertson totaled 76 points at the tournament, with a high game of 26 against Francis Parker.

Gavin Early, San Domenico boys basketball

Early put together a huge game with 30 points, 13 rebounds, and four steals as San Domenico defeated Athenian 63-59 on Friday, avenging a loss in the NorCal Division V championship game last season. Early scored 13 points in the second quarter, helping the Panthers turn a two-point deficit into a 12-point advantage.
