ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)--- The flu is on the rise in New York State.
"What we’re seeing is flu is increasing all over the state, substantially increasing in New York City in particular. Not just cases, but folks ending up in the hospital," said Dr. James McDonald, New York State's Health Commissioner.
According to the New York State Health Department, over 23,000 positive flu cases have been reported this season. Symptoms include fever, coughing, and body aches. Commissioner James McDonald shared ways you can help protect yourself from getting sick.
"If you haven’t had the flu vaccine already, it’s a really good idea to take care of that. I think it’s one of those things that people sometimes forget with all of the hustle and bustle of the holidays, is make sure you take care of you and the flu vaccine is really the best tool you have to protect yourself," explained the Commissioner.
Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, disinfecting frequently touched objects, and staying home when sick are ways to help prevent the virus from spreading. But If you do end up getting the flu, it can be treated with prescription medicines.
The commissioner noted RSV— a respiratory virus, is also going around.
"This is one of those things that it’s not the flu, it’s not the stomach flu, but it’s a bad cold for most people. If you’re 60 or older, it can have you end up in the hospital or even worse. We have a vaccine if you’re 60 or older. It’s one and done. I think people should avail that to themselves."
An RSV vaccine is also recommended for babies during their first year of life.
