The Daily Mail reporter Josh Hughes believes that Ange Postecoglou could look to reunite with his former player as he aims to solve Spurs’ midfield issues in January.
While Tottenham have not had to deal with many injuries in midfield this season, unlike other areas across the pitch, they have been hamstrung by Rodrigo Bentancur‘s suspension.
The fact that Yves Bissouma has struggled for form over recent months has not helped the Lilywhites‘ cause, and one would not be surprised if the club decide to enter the market for reinforcements in the position during the upcoming transfer window.
It has now been suggested that Ange Postecoglou could ask Spurs to sign a 27-year-old midfield workhorse who he is a big fan of.
The player in question is Reo Hatate, who Postecoglou took from the J-League to Celtic back in January of 2021.
In the four years since then, the Japan international has established himself as a linchpin in the heart of the Bhoys midfield and is one of the players who makes the Scottish side tick.
Hughes believes that the Celtic man, who has six goals to his name across all competitions this season, is the kind of player that Tottenham need.
The journalist said on The Spurs Chat Podcast: “The last midfielder I’m going to talk about is Reo Hatate. He scored one of the penalties in the shootout against Rangers.
“Ange knows and trusts the player, he does like a goal or two as well. He’s one I could certainly see happening. If Spurs go in with a reasonable transfer fee Celtic will find it hard to keep him.”
Postecoglou might have taken some players from the J-League to Celtic, but he has resisted the temptation of bringing players from Celtic to Spurs so far.
That is because the Australian would be well aware of the huge difference in quality between the two divisions. Besides, Hatate is already 27 years old and is not going to become much better than he is at the moment.
