Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to seal a double-raid of a Ligue 1 club could be in tatters after a revelation emerges about the club’s plan for the duo.
Lille may soon be about to lose two of their biggest stars, with both Jonathan David and Angel Gomes having just six months to leave on their contracts.
Neither the striker nor the midfielder appear close to signing a new deal at the moment and their situation would undoubtedly attract the interest of a number of sides across Europe.
Tottenham are one of those sides, with reports even claiming a little over a week ago that Ange Postecoglou‘s men have held talks with representatives of both players.
Given the contract situations of Gomes and David, one would assume that Lille would be keen to listen to offers for the duo in January as they would not want to lose them on free transfers next summer.
However, the club’s president Olivier Letang has now surprisingly asserted that neither player will exit Stade Pierre-Mauroy until the end of this season.
Reacting to the transfer speculation, Letang said (via L’Equipe du Soir): “It is out of the question that an important player, who is playing well for the team, leaves us in January.”
Both David and Gomes will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a non-French club from January as they will be into the final six months of their contract.
Spurs may thus be speaking to their representatives over an agreement, but there is no doubt that the Lilywhites will face competition from a spate of clubs across the continent.
It is not often that teams get the chance to sign players of this calibre on free transfers, which is why numerous clubs would be queuing up for the Lille duo.
