Paul Merson has given his score prediction for Tottenham vs Liverpool. The game could prove to be a new kind of challenge for Liverpool.
Tottenham host Liverpool in the Premier League this Sunday in what may be the most stern test both sides have yet to face.
Liverpool will travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with the league’s most resolute defence, having only conceded 13 goals in their 15 matches.
Any opportunity created against Liverpool needs to be seized and fortunately for Spurs, Tottenham have just hit a hot streak. Scoring 9 goals from approximately 3.11 expected goals is the kind of finishing Spurs will need to maintain if they want to claim three points against Liverpool.
Speaking to Sportskeeda, Paul Merson has predicted the outcome of the weekend’s closing match.
Before the Carabao Cup match against Manchester United, Merson said “It all depends on what happens with Tottenham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United. If they lose, that’s another trophy gone and it could be a dire mood heading into the Liverpool game. That could have an impact on Spurs.
“But then again, it’s always weird predicting Tottenham’s games because you just don’t know how they will turn up on the night. They are so up and down and you can never tell when it comes to them.
“Arne Slot rested a lot of players for the cup game. If they had lost that game, it would not have mattered much. No disrespect to the EFL Cup, I won it as a player by scoring in the final and becoming man of the match in it. But getting through to the semi-final is a nightmare for them because now they have to play two extra games in January and that’s a huge load on this team.
“I don’t think Liverpool should rush Diogo Jota back into the starting line-up despite him scoring against Fulham. There are a lot of games coming up and the last thing they want is him getting injured again. He’s a quality player and proved that when he came off the bench and scored the equaliser last weekend.
“Ange Postecoglou prefers the gung-ho approach and if Spurs turn up like how we know they can, Liverpool will have to be careful. I still expect the visitors to get all three points here.”
Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Liverpool
While it does not seem to have been his intention, Merson has stumbled upon a salient point. Tottenham’s success against Manchester United could prove to be a significant psychological boost, proving that they can beat any side when the team clicks.
Additionally, his comments regarding Liverpool’s injuries signify the difficulty of the fixture schedule and how missing players can dramatically affect performance levels. While these points could be far more clearly illustrated by a Tottenham side currently missing nine first-team players, it does demonstrate the difficulties all teams in UEFA competitions are having this season.
Liverpool may prove too much for a depleted Tottenham team regardless of recent form, but Merson’s prediction is indicative of a double standard being applied to Spurs in comparison to other sides.
