Ange Postecoglou makes an admission about the ongoing fan protests against Daniel Levy and the Spurs ownership and speaks on whether it affects the club’s progress.
Levy is under more pressure at the moment than he has been at any time across his Tottenham tenure, with chants calling for the club’s chairman to leave ringing around the stadium once again in their most recent Carabao Cup quarterfinal against Man Utd.
The Spurs supremo was in attendance on Thursday and would have heard what was being sung about him, although his expressions gave very little away.
The situation is not expected to improve for the 61-year-old anytime soon, with peaceful protests expected ahead of the clash against Liverpool.
The disconnect between the supporters and the club’s hierarchy is blatantly obvious at Tottenham, and Postecoglou admitted that not having everyone aligned is not ideal for the club’s progress.
However, the 59-year-old made it clear that the fans are well within their right to express their feelings.
When asked about the planned protests against the club’s owners, the Spurs head coach told Football.London: “I’ve said before, I think the path to success is a lot smoother when everyone is aligned, absolutely. When there is discourse, invariably it affects the way forwards. But at the same time, we live in a world where people are allowed to express their feelings.
“We’ve just got to make sure on Sunday, the things we can control, particularly me in terms of the football department, we go out there against a top side and put on a performance where our fans are focussed on what’s happening on the field. We need them on Sunday.
“I thought they were great last night with the noise they made to get us through it with the energy. We’re going to need that on Sunday, for sure. So hopefully that becomes the main talking points out of it.”
Levy is not the only one who is under pressure, with a significant portion of the Tottenham fan base seemingly not yet fully convinced that Postecoglou is the right man to get the side challenging for silverware.
However, the 59-year-old will perhaps get more leeway from the fans compared to some of his predecessors, given the kind of entertaining football that he is delivering.
When Postecoglou was asked if he is delivering the kind of football that fans want to see, he responded: “That’s not for me to judge. That’s for the supporters to measure. When I came in, I made it clear, and I think the club knew what I was about. I wasn’t going to come in and do anything different after 26 years. That’s not what I’m about.
“My impression is that’s what the club wanted. Of course, they want to win things. Every club does. But they want to be a team to play a certain way. I was excited by that and that’s what I’m trying to deliver. Whether supporters understand or appreciate that I’m not sure. That’s up to them.
“The supporters I have any contact with out and about – this is what they want. They want to win. But they want the team to be playing in this manner, with this intent.”
