The Patriots face a daunting final three weeks of the regular season, and someone might pay the price.
New England was expected to be awful, but how it went 3-11 has fans wanting change at the end of the season. There’s been mixed reporting on how safe Jerod Mayo’s job is, but all signs point to Alex Van Pelt being the scapegoat.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Toucher & Hardy” described the change as “a pound of flesh will be extracted.” The Boston Sports Journal’s Mike Giardi believes Van Pelt “has been gone for like two months.”
“I legit think there was almost nothing that was going to save him,” Giardi said on WEEI’s “Afternoon Show.”
It would be a fascinating move for the Patriots to make as Drake Maye was one of Van Pelt’s strongest supporters amid New England’s losing streak. The former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator also was credited as a key person in Maye’s development.
Coaching changes are nothing new in the NFL, but reports indicate it is one Robert Kraft is contemplating. Whether or not the final three weeks of the season will factor into that decision will be a wait-and-see. A chance to save jobs will start this Sunday against the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium.
