SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Schenectady City School District gave an update on the timeline for installing the weapons detection system. The district said the system will be installed on Jan. 2-3.
They will be operational on Monday, January 6. Students and staff will have a couple days to become acclimated to the new system before it's fully implemented on Jan. 8.
The district purchased RONIN Weapons Detection Systems from MIS Security, LLC, a Florida-based security company. The system includes both a walk-through scanner and a bag scanner, equipped with sensors designed to detect weapons and other prohibited items.
The systems will cost $618,000 and will be paid in installments over three years.
The school board voted to install the detection system in response to safety issues. There were a couple fights at the high school in the first few weeks of the school year, including one that involved a knife and sent two students to the hospital.
