There has been a lot of rumor and speculation (and as they say in Oz, innuendo and outuendo ????), about the sexuality of Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked… and now the writer of the movie is responding.
Fans of the Wicked universe have speculated that Glinda and Elphaba are both queer and in a romantic relationship with each other. Actresses Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both responded to the theories.
Gregory Maguire, who wrote the “Wicked” novel, has even confirmed that he intentionally put some “sapphic tension” between the characters.
Now, Broadway and movie writer Winnie Holzman is speaking out in response to theories about how the characters were written in the film.

“For me, that is not it,” Winnie told THR about the speculation. “But that is not to say that I don’t feel gratitude if the queer community is feeling queerness in the movie. There’s very real reasons why that would be, and I think that’s beautiful.”
“In a funny way, it’s really not my business. I want people to have their own response,” Winnie added. “Both of them have a destiny and they needed each other to reach that destiny, and to me, isn’t that fulfilling enough?”
