NEW YORK (PIX11) – In anticipation of a wintry mix heading to New York City, the Department of Sanitation is warning New Yorkers to stay off the roads.
Sanitation workers will start treating the streets at 2 p.m. for incoming rain and snow as temperatures are expected to stay or be a little bit above freezing. That could make roadways slippery and slushy if left untreated, according to DSNY.
The city has 700 million pounds of salt on hand to treat the roads.
Property owners are responsible for clearing snow from sidewalks, according to the DSNY. Cleared snow cannot be pushed into the street, as it disrupts the DSNY's operations and is illegal to do, officials said.
Sanitation workers handle streets, highways and bike lanes.
