ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- Over the past week, residents in St. Landry Parish received tax breakdown packets in the mail to show where tax dollars go each year.
Parish President Jessie Bellard said this breakdown was necessary as questions have continued to come to his office regarding the parish budget and why money is prioritized differently.
"The calls I get over the years is just, 'What are you doing with the money? ...All the tax money is coming into your office.' And when I explain to them, they look at me in shock and not understand why it is like it is," Bellard said.
Bellard hosted a live stream for residents to break down how tax dollars are spent.
In the packet, Bellard explained that out of the 33.62 mills collected from taxpayers, only 11% goes to parish government, with the bulk going to the school board followed by the sheriff's office.
Bellard said while the parish government receives their mills, most of it will be spent on mandated expenses, some of which continue to add up and surpass budget.
"We are going to be looking at some so many state statutes to be revised next session, because we think that after being on being in place for 40 years under the current structure, it is time for a change, and we will be pushing hard for that. And I say we, meaning parish governments across the state of Louisiana," Bellard said.
Bellard assured residents their taxes will not increase.
"What I don't want people to think is all you want to do is raise taxes. This is not even close to that. I want you to know what we're doing with your money we have now. And if I can figure out a way where we don't have to spend a lot of this money where we shouldn't be spent, that's what we're going to do. But I'm not going after the people for more money," he said.
Bellard said anyone with questions can feel free to contact him directly.
