TOPEKA (KSNT) - Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced Wednesday that $13 million will be going toward several of the state's railways.
Kelly said 14 Kansas rail projects will be receiving the money through the Kansas Department of Transportation's (KDOT) Rail Service Improvement Program (RSIP). The cash will be used to improve these railways in 16 different counties.
“These projects reflect the diverse needs faced by our Kansas communities and rail operators,” Kelly said. “By bolstering the state’s rail network, we will promote economic opportunity throughout Kansas.”
KDOT received 22 applications totaling more than $33.1 million in project costs with funding requests going above $23 million. Funding for the project is provided through the RSIP's $10 million annual funding combined with an additional $3 million in carryover funds and loan payments from previous projects.
“Implementing these improvements will inevitably foster long-term growth,” Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed said. “We’re proud to be able to provide additional funding this round, strengthening connectivity and supporting communities that rely on having access to an efficient and reliable rail network.”
The Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad and Seaboard Energy Hugoton Rail Expansion Project are among the projects receiving part of this disbursement. Full cash dispersal details can be found below:
