Former Norwich City star Chris Sutton is of the view that the Canaries should follow Brentford’s example to earn promotion and then stay up in the Premier League.
Norwich and Brentford earned promotion to the Premier League in the 2019/20 season, but the Canaries failed to stay up as they were relegated in the following season.
Since their last relegation from the Premier League, Norwich have yet to get promoted again and despite a bright start to this ongoing season, they are now eight points off from the last playoff spot.
Sutton pointed out that Brentford, under Thomas Frank, built their team by recruiting players in the Championship with patience and pointed out that the Bees went up in the Premier League with a plan that has made them a stable club in the top flight.
He thinks that Norwich should learn from Brentford and follow their model by significantly strengthening, which he believes will help them to be competitive in the Premier League when they go up.
“Brentford is the marker for Norwich”, Sutton wrote in his Pink Un column.
“They came up at the same time and represent a blueprint for how they can be successful, albeit they have spent well.
“They had to build for a significant period of time in the Championship under Thomas Frank before getting to the Premier League.
“They are now stable in the top flight and aren’t a side you ever really consider could go down.
“Norwich now need to build and recruit in a similar way.
“With Mark Attanasio, they have a bit more financial muscle behind them, but it won’t be excessive.
“It is a process that should, in the long term, help them be more competitive in the Premier League.”
Norwich are struggling with several injuries and suspensions and in the winter window they are expected to recruit in several positions.
