LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Around 200 children in Lafayette public housing received Christmas gifts on their doorstep today, for the 20th year in a row.
Lindell Smith, a 15-year resident at one of the developments, said it's beautiful to see each year.
"It's a lot of single parents out here just struggling on their own," Smith said. "They say how the money is so tight."
As a grandmother of nine, she knows the impact one gift will have on the families in her neighborhood.
"That's so beautiful y'all could give an extra gift to make them open their present for Christmas," Smith said.
Shantale Miller, Lafayette Housing Authority Public Housing Director, said the National Panhellenic Council Lafayette Group donated hundreds of gifts.
Sorority and fraternity members donating the gifts are from: Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.
"There's no better blessing than to be a blessing to others," Smith said. "So, I'm just thankful to everybody that played a part."
Lydia Bergeron, Lafayette Housing Authority Executive Director, said delivering these gifts is part of the housing authority's mission.
"Our mission is to provide decent, sanitary and safe environment," Bergeron said. "That means we also have to take care of, not only our residents but their children as well. And this is our way of showing how much we love our residents, as well as our children."
