ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Questions remain about what's responsible for the increase in drone sightings around the Capital Region. Flying objects have also been seen in multiple other states.
The reports are raising concerns about where they are coming from. The FBI said they received more than 5,000 reports in recent weeks, but only 100 of those needed further investigation.
Experts said there are several legitimate reasons for drones being flown.
"A lot of people use drones for real estate now," NUAIR CEO Ken Stewart said. "Different departments of transportation are using drones to inspect bridges or light poles. Cities are using them to look at asset inspections, so buildings, rooftops. So drones are used for many things -- agriculture. Police use them for accident reconstruction."
Experts acknowledge that drones can cause disruption, particularly if they are flown near an airport or military facility. State and federal leaders are calling for more rules for drone use in sensitive areas.
