Alec Baldwin Breaks Silence on ‘Rust’ Charges, Promises to ‘Expose What Really Happened'

On the latest episode of Lemonada Media’s podcast Fail Better with David Duchovny, Alec Baldwin finally broke his silence about being charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The charges were dropped for a second time by a New Mexico judge earlier this year after it was found that the state had withheld crucial evidence from the defense.

Speaking to Duchovny, Baldwin expressed a belief that “the mainstream press and the tabloid press suppressed every story that could benefit me and amplified every story that could hurt me” during the three years following the tragedy. “There's more to come,” Baldwin said, “but the ‘more to come’ is now my effort, and it's going to be undeniably a successful effort, to raise and to expose what really happened.”

The actor continued: “This has been for three years, and the truth of what happened has never been told, never. We have more s--t that's going to come out in ensuing legal filings and so forth.”

Baldwin went on to say that, while he’s grateful the trial was “canceled,” he was hoping for a jury verdict that would have exonerated him legally and in the court of public opinion.

“She ruled that it was dismissed with prejudice,” Baldwin said of Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, “which I'm very grateful for because it was, I think, a very, very informed decision on her part. But if I'd gone all the way and gotten a verdict, that's a little bit better because a bunch of people in a jury had considered the facts and we would've presented so much more.”

However, Baldwin feels grateful that his professional colleagues seem ready to move beyond the headline-grabbing trial which threatened to derail his career. “I do believe, by the communications I've had lately, that things are coming back my way to work, and I'm happy for that because I've got seven kids,” he said frankly.

But for the time being, Baldwin wants to take a break from discussing Hutchins’ tragic death and the court proceedings. “I'm going to take a break. I don't want to talk about this for a while. I want to kind of take a nap,” he explained. “There's another phase of this, but we're going to get to that probably in a couple months,” he added. “In the meantime, I want to have a nice holiday with my family.”
