Passenger Oliver West, 32, told us: “Police were telling everyone to back away from the barriers.”
He said there was “plenty of confusion” and it wasn’t until he finally got onto his train later that the announcer said it was due to a “suspicious package”.
The software firm accounts manager was heading to Audley End Station, in Essex, as part of his commute home.
He said he arrived at Liverpool Street after work at around 6.15pm and within 10 or 15 minutes the disruption started.
“The main hall was jam packed full of people – and I think at that point they’d already started cancelling trains.”
Oliver continued: “I was waiting near the barriers and there were lots of police there, telling us all to back away.
“Then the alarm started going off.”
He described the atmosphere as “pretty calm”, adding: “People were on their phones and no one really knew what was going on.
“There was a lot of confusion.”
He waited outside the station but was able to get on his train after only a 15 minute delay.
“I think I was lucky to be honest,” he added.
Other passengers have taken to social media to vent their frustration.
One wrote on X: “Liverpool Street Station being evacuated… Chaos!!”
Another commented: “London Liverpool Street station completely evacuated as I was about to hop on the train home.
“Sirens going off and told to evacuate immediately…It was like something straight out of a war zone.”
Train service Greater Anglia wrote: “Due to the police dealing with an incident at London Liverpool Street some lines are blocked.
“Train services running to and from this station may be cancelled, delayed or revised.
“Disruption is expected until further notice. Specific train service alterations are available.”
It’s understood full service had resumed before 7pm.
The Sun has contacted British Transport Police.
