AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Fallen San Marcos Police Department officer Justin Putnam will be recognized Tuesday morning with an honorary street renaming. This will take place at a press conference at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Lake Creek Parkway and Mellow Meadows Drive.
According to a press release from the city of Austin, a portion Mellow Meadows will be officially recognized as Officer Justin Putnam Drive through an honorary renaming. Putnam graduated from Westwood High School back in 2007, which is located near the road that will be renamed.
Officer Putnam was killed while responding to a domestic violence call on April 18, 2020. Two other officers were also injured in the shooting that police described as an "ambush." Those two officers later recovered.
In October, City Council Member Kelly introduced the resolution to honor Officer Putnam with the street renaming. The press release said Putnam dedicated his career to serving the San Marcos community since November 2014.
Kelly stated at the time of the resolution's introduction, “Renaming this street in honor of Officer Putnam is a small but significant way for us to express our gratitude for his service and sacrifice. His bravery and commitment to the community will always be remembered, and we hope this tribute serves as a constant reminder of his legacy.”
The city of Austin said members of the public and community organizations are encouraged to attend the event to honor Officer Putnam's memory.
