First lady Jill Biden announced on Monday that she has taught her final class at Northern Virginia Community College after 15 years at the school.
At a virtual “thank you” event for educators, Biden made the surprise announcement a little over a month before she and her husband leave the White House.
“Being your first lady has been the honor of my life. But being your colleague has been the work of my life,” Biden said while sitting beside Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, and Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association.
“Last Thursday, I taught my last class of the semester, and my final class ever at Northern Virginia Community College,” she added. “I will always love this profession, which is why I continued to teach full-time while serving as your first lady.”
Biden began teaching English at the community college in 2009, after Joe Biden was elected as vice president. She began her teaching career back in 1976 at a high school in Delaware.
She later became first first lady to continue a full-time career after her husband became president.
“And I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of fellow educators,” she said.
