We now know when Rodrigo Bentancur will return after the FA rejected Tottenham’s appeal against the midfielder’s seven-match ban.
Spurs had appealed the initial decision of the FA’s independent regulatory counsel to hit Bentacnur with a seven-match suspension for his derogatory comments on Heung-min Son in the summer.
Tottenham had subsequently appealed the decision, with reports indicating that the Lilywhites were hoping to reduce the ban from seven matches to six.
However, the FA confirmed this morning that the independent regulatory commission’s verdict would be upheld and that Spurs’ appeal had been dismissed.
Bentancur‘s ban is only applicable for domestic fixtures and not for European games, which is why the midfielder has continued to feature in the Europa League.
The Uruguayan has already served five of his seven-game ban, sitting out the clashes against Manchester City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea and Southampton.
That means that the 27-year-old will be unavailable for just two more matches: The EFL Cup quarterfinal against Man Utd and the Premier League clash against Liverpool.
Bentancur will be available for selection when Tottenham travel to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.
In Bentancur’s absence, Tottenham have struggled to progress the ball from back to front, with Yves Bissouma‘s displays over recent weeks leaving a lot to be desired.
The former Juventus man’s return will thus be a welcome sight for Postecoglou, but the Spurs head coach still has two more challenging fixtures to navigate without his key midfield man.
