According to reports in Spain, Ange Postecoglou has identified one experienced La Liga defender as his top defensive target for January.
Given the injuries that Tottenham have in their backline, it seems inevitable that the North London club will reinforce their defence in January.
Last week, multiple outlets reported that Getafe’s Omar Alderete, who had been extremely consistent for the Spanish side over the last couple of years, had emerged as a potential target for Tottenham.
In fact, it was revealed that the Lilywhites had already begun negotiations to sign the Paraguay international.
The print edition of AS (as relayed by Sport Witness) now back up Tottenham’s interest in Alderete. They say that the reason the Getafe man is on Tottenham’s wishlist is because of Postecoglou, who is a fan of the player.
It is explained that the Australian admires the players’ strength in duals and his ability on the ball and thus sees him as a perfect fit for his system.
The 59-year-old is thought to have informed the Spurs hierarchy to bring the defender to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next month.
AS point out that Spurs are not the only club eyeing Alderete, who is also on the wishlist of other sides, but they do not name who those clubs are.
Interestingly, it is revealed that although the centre-back is contracted to Getafe until 2028, his contract includes a €16m (£13.3m) buyout clause.
That would make the Getafe man a tempting option for Spurs, who are only after a backup option rather than a starting centre-back.
