President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to head the Federal Trade Commission could turn into Big Tech’s worst nightmare.
Trump announced on Truth Social Tuesday that Federal Trade Commissioner Andrew Ferguson will be promoted as the agency’s chair, affirming he “has a proven record of standing up to Big Tech censorship, and protecting Freedom of Speech in our Great Country.” Ferguson replied on X by vowing to “end Big Tech’s vendetta against competition and free speech.”
Trump predicted Ferguson will “fight on behalf of the American People on Day One of my Administration,” adding, “Andrew will be the most America First, and pro-innovation FTC Chair in our Country’s History. CONGRATULATIONS ANDREW!” Ferguson, an antitrust warrior, had predictions of his own: “American businesses will become stronger and more competitive, and will better serve workers and consumers, than ever before.”

He added, “At the FTC, we will end Big Tech’s vendetta against competition and free speech. We will make sure that America is the world’s technological leader and the best place for innovators to bring new ideas to life.”
MRC Free Speech America Vice President Dan Schneider hailed Trump’s appointment of Ferguson, writing on X: “Time to walk the plank, @Google.”
Among Ferguson’s targets in his war on censorship are NewsGuard and the World Federation of Advertisers’ Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) initiative, which work to direct ad revenue away from right-leaning websites online.
Ferguson stated on Dec. 2, “NewsGuard is, of course, free to rate websites by whatever metric it wants. But the antitrust laws do not permit third parties to facilitate group boycotts among competitors.”
During the Nov. 30 episode of Steve Bannon’s War Room, Ferguson put “advertising cartels” on notice. At the same time, he also slammed government-Big Tech collusion to censor, as revealed in the Twitter Files and the landmark lawsuit Murthy v. Missouri. “When the government picks up the phone and calls X or YouTube or Instagram or whatever and says, I need you to take this thing down, the government can forbid its own officials from doing that,” he argued.
