SHE had seemingly been left to rot in the kitchen of Roy’s Rolls or slumped on the sofa of the Platt house muttering the occasional funny line.
But soap fans are now finally getting to see Shona Platt in action for what feels like the first time in years after Coronation Street bosses actually gave actress Julia Goulding something to do with her brand new raunchy affair storyline.
Shona Platt has finally been handed her first storyline in four years – and it was certainly needed[/caption] Her new affair with Kit Green has given her character a new lease of life[/caption] Her place as just David’s wife became boring and stale[/caption]Shona has been on the street for exactly eight years after first debuting in December 2016 but it feels like over the last four years she has merely been reduced to a spare part.
It long felt that bosses had lost control of what to do with the character particularly after her last major storyline saw her get a lifelong traumatic brain injury after being shot on Christmas Day in 2019.
It resulted in Shona undergoing quite the personality transplant as bosses transitioned her from a ballsy loudmouth to a humorous bit-part merely there to provide David with someone to talk to when the rest of the Platt clan weren’t around.
But this always felt like an injustice to Shona. Julia had more than proved her stuff when it came to her acting expertise and it has always felt as though there could be way more done for her character.
Why did we never see Shona make any friends? Why did she never have a girl gang she could get up to mischief with?
For a long while, it felt as though Shona never existed outside of her shifts in the cafe and cleaning up after the mysterious Lily Platt at No.8.
Bosses completely ignored Shona and sidelined her for far too long when it was clear there was so much that could be done with her character.
I bet not many of you could even recall a major Shona story since her dramatic shooting.
So little has happened to her that her character’s Wikipedia page hasn’t seen an update since the Christmas of 2020.
I bet Julia breathed a sigh of relief when she was told that Shona would finally be getting her time in the spotlight once again – and it was certainly needed.
Throwing her into an unexpected affair with hunky copper Kit Green was the perfect way to add a bit of jazz back into her life.
Admittedly, the plot came out of nowhere but in a time where Coronation Street seems to be make bad decision after bad decision, this one actually felt like a positive step forward.
For once, we get to see Shona away from David and existing as herself as opposed to just his wife.
Pairing her with Weatherfield’s new favourite resident, Kit, has also allowed him to continue his role as the Street’s new ladies man.
It has been refreshing to see Shona watching her back at all times as well as showing off her daring side by enjoying her secret rendezvous with the policeman.
Although I do think Shona and David make a good pairing and feel as though they have the chance to go the distance – we needed this affair to happen to spice things up.
While they do make a good couple – a bit of marital drama was required[/caption]They had become stale and boring and it was about time that it was Shona that was the star of the couple as opposed to her hubby.
It has been the perfect juicy romance to hit the cobbles and not just the same old dreary Daniel Osbourne stuck between two women for the hundredth time.
I hope this plot manages to deliver justice to Shona and remind Corrie watchers why she’s paramount to the soap.
I equally hope that when the truth comes out and things begin to settle, bosses don’t tick off ‘Shona storyline complete’ and shove her right back behind the cafe counter for another 4 years with nothing to do.
Let this be the start of a positive Shona run and let’s get her right back to the forefront of the drama once again.
Bosses need to keep Shona at the forefront of stories going forward[/caption]
