BRITS have been left ‘haunted’ after they only just realise what pigs in blankets actually mean in the US.
Pigs in blankets are a firm favourite of many foodies up and down the country, but it turns out that over in the States, a ‘crucial element’ has been swapped.
Food fans have been left ‘haunted’ after only just realising with pigs in blankets actually mean in the US[/caption] Unlike our iconic festive treat, over the pond, a crucial element is nowhere in sight[/caption] In the US, a ‘pig in a blanket’ swaps bacon for pastry, like our UK sausage rolls[/caption]For many of us meat lovers, sausages wrapped in bacon – what’s not to like?
Well, potentially quite a lot if you’re an American, who might be expecting something totally different.
With Christmas just eight days away, one person took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote: “American pigs in blankets really haunt me, why would you swap out the crucial element.”
To this, another mindblown food fan also penned: “Learning that American pigs in blankets are a totally different thing to ours has changed my worldview.”
It turns out that our much-loved carnivorous snack, which is sure to be eaten in many households this Christmas, really isn’t the same as what those in the US are munching on.
In the UK, chipolata or cocktail sausages are wrapped in delicious, salty bacon and roasted in the oven until crisp.
However, in the US, the bacon is nowhere in sight.
Not only this, but they don’t have to just appear alongside a roast dinner either.
For Americans, come December, these snacks are often used to jazz up everything from sandwiches to buffet tables.
In America, they’re known as ‘pigs in a blanket’ and the bacon is swapped out for pastry – somewhat similar to our version of a sausage roll.
The sausages used also often tend to be hotdog-style over the typical meaty banger primarily used across the pond.
After the penny dropped and many realised the striking difference in the snacks, foodies took to social media to share their shock.
Brits reveal unusual food combinations that are so wrong, they feel right
Research by LNER claims that a whopping four in five Brits experiment with unusual flavours, and almost a quarter have a ‘guilty pleasure’ when it comes to unconventional food combinations,
One foodie questioned: “Wait pigs in blankets in America are sausage wrapped in dough and not sausage wrapped in bacon??? What the f**k??
“IT’S LITERALLY A SAUSAGE ROLL OMG.”

Another commented: “Wait… pigs in blankets in America are sausages wrapped in pastry? My dude – that’s called a sausage roll.
“Pigs in blankets are sausages wrapped in bacon. Ironically, wrapping a sausage in bacon seems more American than wrapping it in pastry.”
Whilst a third said: “Did you know that in America, their pigs in blankets are hotdogs in CROISSANT DOUGH?!
“To any Americans reading this, in the UK, pigs in blankets are sausages wrapped in bacon.”
