Basketball tournament season is in full swing and a pair of Marin teams claimed titles this past week, led by host Archie Williams prevailing at the Carl “Red” Brown Tournament on Saturday night.
The San Rafael boys team continued its blistering start to the season by sweeping through three games at the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament in Healdsburg.
The highlights in girls basketball included a career night from The Branson School’s top scorer and an impressive win for Redwood against San Domenico.
Soccer highlights included a Terra Linda sophomore scoring a hat trick in a wild non-league win against Archie Williams and a Branson standout scoring a late winner to keep the Bulls perfect on the season. The Marin Catholic boys and Marin Academy girls also netted key wins against Marin opposition.
Sohn was named tournament MVP while Wright was an all-tournament selection for the host Peregrine Falcons, who capped a 4-0 week by winning the Carl “Red” Brown title on Saturday. Sohn had 16 points, five rebounds and three assists in the championship game, a 53-45 overtime win against San Anselmo neighbor San Domenico. Wright had 18 points, three rebounds, and two blocks against the Panthers. Wright had a big scoring week overall, netting 30 in a non-league win over Tam before putting up 16 against Kennedy and 20 against Hayward in tournament action. Sohn had another strong all-around game against Hayward with 15 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
Early scored 25 points, making two clutch free throws in the final minute of regulation to help the Panthers force overtime in an eventual loss to Archie Williams at the Red Brown Tournament on Saturday. Early was named to the all-tournament team after scoring 13 points in San Domenico’s opening win against Skyline of Oakland then posting a 14-point, nine-rebound, five-assist, four-steal line in the semifinals against Justin-Siena.
San Rafael swept through four games this week, winning the final three to capture the title at the Redwood Empire Invitational Basketball Tournament. Brovelli took tournament MVP honors, scoring 30 points in the quarterfinals against AIMS College Prep, 27 in the semifinals against Kelseyville, then 26 more in the final against Healdsburg. Will Healy was named the best defensive player at the tournament with three games of double-digit rebounds (14, 10, and 13). Shapiro was an all-tournament selection with a 22-point, five-rebound, four-assist stat line in the title game. Shapiro also had 22 points, seven rebounds, and four assists in the semifinal.
Myerberg hit eight 3-pointers en route to a career-high 36 points as the Bulls picked up their lone win at the Windsor tournament on Saturday with a 66-34 victory against Casa Grande.
Saibel hit six 3-pointers during an 18-point game as the Giants won their second intra-county showdown of the season, posting a 71-47 victory against San Domenico on Saturday. Redwood’s next game is a road contest against Branson at 4:30 p.m. next Saturday.
Carroll was the lone Marin champion at San Marin High’s Green and Gold Tournament on Saturday, winning the heavyweight division after a pinfall victory against Arroyo’s Austin Celzo. Carroll, a two-time MCAL champion, was the top seed in the tournament and won all four of his matches after receiving a first-round bye.
Cifuentes netted a hat trick as TL roared back from a two-goal deficit in the first half for a 4-3 win against Archie Williams on Tuesday. Cifuentes scored TL’s first goal in the 20th minute then scored the third goal to tie the game at 3-3 with about 15 minutes to play. Cifuentes added the final goal with about five minutes left in the game. Cifuentes also scored twice for the Trojans as they went 0-1-1 at the Mission City Invitational at San Rafael High.
Ochoa scored twice, including a late winner, as Marin Catholic secured a 3-2 non-league win against Novato on Saturday. Ochoa scored MC’s second goal off an assist by Griffin Jones and got the third one after an assist by Dylan Hyman.
Pearson scored three times in as many games this past week, perhaps most crucially netting a stoppage-time winner to keep the Bulls perfect on the season with a 4-3 victory against Urban on Thursday. Pearson had already scored in the 63rd minute to give Branson a 3-2 lead. Urban tied the game in the 69th minute but Pearson provided the winner with an unassisted goal in the 82nd minute. Pearson also scored the opening goal in a 4-0 road win against Ukiah on Tuesday. The Bulls have won all seven of their games so far this season.
Farese led the way again in the second week of the Fremont Firebird Classic, scoring two goals and adding an assist as Redwood defeated Sobrato 5-0 on Saturday. The Giants went 3-0-1 in the competition with Farese scoring six times.
Walker scored a pair of goals last week, including the game winner in a 1-0 victory against Marin Catholic on Friday. Walker’s initial shot from inside the 6-yard box was blocked by MC goalie Finn Seymore. Several players from both teams gathered in a scrum in front of goal but Walker, basically lying on the ground at this point, was able to get a boot to it for a 1-0 lead. Walker also scored the third goal for MA in a 3-1 win against Terra Linda on Tuesday.
