'Let’s do it': MAGA Republican's bold proposal gets thumbs up from Dem

A firebrand Republican senator and MAGA ally's new proposal just got a thumbs up from at least one Democratic lawmaker.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) is floating a new proposal to boost the child tax credit in the next Congress. The conservative senator said Monday that he supports raising the child tax credit from a maximum of $2,000 to $5,000 per child, Axios reported.

“These are the people working class, people with families are who elected Donald Trump, and we need to deliver real and meaningful tax relief to them,” Hawley told Axios in an interview.

Hawley added that he's already had discussions with President-elect Donald Trump and his team about the proposal “and took Vice President-elect JD Vance's lead on the specific $5,000 number.”

Sen.-elect Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) is already throwing his support behind the idea.

“I’ve long said we need to do everything we can to support families," the Democratic congressman elected last month to the Senate wrote on X above a link to the Hawley interview. “Increasing the child tax credit puts more money in the pockets of Arizonans. Let’s do it.”

But with a price tag over 10 years of between $2 trillion to $3 trillion, Hawley’s plan could be costly and “complicates the math" for incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), "who have thin margins to extend President-elect Trump's signature tax bill,” according to Axios.

The publication added that only three GOP senators – including Hawley – voted to expand the child tax credit as part of a bipartisan tax package before it failed this year.
