The European Union has announced the allocation of approximately €19.8 million to Afghanistan to promote economic growth, strengthen sustainable development, empower communities, and reduce dependence on humanitarian aid.
In a statement released on Monday, December 16, the EU emphasized that its aid in Afghanistan will focus on supporting the most vulnerable populations, including women, girls, minorities, internally displaced persons, and refugees.
“Millions in Afghanistan remain trapped in poverty, with women disproportionately bearing the burden,” stated Veronika Boskovic Pohar, EU Chargée d’Affaires, EU Delegation to Afghanistan. “This initiative supports inclusive and sustainable economic growth, helping communities build self-reliance. By enhancing employment, income generation, and productivity.
She expressed hope that this initiative would support inclusive and sustainable economic growth in Afghanistan and help many people, especially women, returnees, and farmers, achieve self-sufficiency.
The statement further mentioned that $22 million of the EU’s assistance will be allocated to addressing the urgent needs of Afghan communities, strengthening long-term economic stability, inclusivity, and resilience through the Aga Khan Foundation and its cultural services.
Najmuddin Najm, the Executive Director of the Aga Khan Foundation, remarked that “This partnership represents the shared commitment of the EU and AKDN to support Afghanistan, focusing on creating economic welfare and livelihood opportunities for some of the most vulnerable populations, including women and youth.”
He stressed that “This project aims to strengthen local economies, enhance agricultural production, and improve livelihoods.”
