The UK Minister for Afghanistan stated in a press release on Monday, December 16, that he met with Afghan students in Doha, discussing their concerns and offering support for their education and future prospects amidst the ongoing challenges in Afghanistan.
The statement stated that “The UK Minister for the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Hamish Falconer, met with Afghan students from the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) in Doha. They discussed UK support for Afghanistan, ongoing restrictions and the students’ hopes for the future.”
Minister Falconer said, “I had the privilege of meeting young Afghans studying in Doha. We discussed the challenges they face as well as their hopes for the future. I made clear the UK’s support for an equal Afghanistan, particularly for women and girls. They are Afghanistan’s future.”
The Minister reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan, with the UK delivering £161 million in aid (14.1 billion Afghanis) between April 2024 and March 2025.
The Minister repeated his strong criticism of the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan and reports of a ban on medical training for women. He posted on X that a ban on medical education for women “is a shortsighted and immoral decision. It threatens the lives of Afghan women and the health of future generations.”
This meeting comes amid the increased restrictions imposed by the Taliban, who recently banned women from attending medical institutions, further restricting their access to education and professional opportunities in Afghanistan.
The meeting underscored the UK’s continued commitment to supporting Afghan students and fostering educational opportunities, despite the challenging circumstances. The UK government remains dedicated to empowering Afghanistan’s youth for a brighter future.
