Premier League reveals why Man Utd were not awarded penalty following Dias’ challenge on Hojlund
Manchester United expected to be handed a penalty in the 64th minute of their Premier League game against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Ruben Dias stepped across Rasmus Hojlund and tripped him while he attempted to bring a bouncing ball down in the box, but referee Anthony Taylor ruled that no foul was committed.
He was supported by a brief VAR check. The decision left Man United fans bewildered as most people thought it was a glaring foul.
The Premier League have released a statement explaining why the decision was given.
It was a disappointing decision, as a penalty would have been awarded in most cases for the same foul, and the Red Devils would have felt very hurt by the decision had they not won the game.
It could have proven costly had Man United not eventually picked up all three points.
They were let down by the officiating and will hope to get lucky with such crucial decisions going forward.
The Red Devils were eventually awarded another penalty in the 86th minute after Matheus Nunes brought down Amad Diallo in the box.
Bruno Fernandes drew them level from the spot after sending Ederson the wrong way.
Diallo put them ahead a few minutes later to help them secure a much-needed victory, and manager Ruben Amorim will hope the game is a turning point for his players.
Man United headed into the match on the back of consecutive league defeats against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, and leaving Etihad with all three points would have been a huge relief.
They return to action on Thursday when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup.
Booking a place in the semi-finals will get the fans very excited and give them hope they can win silverware this term.
