With the January transfer window set to open in just under three weeks, Tottenham are finalising their targets and making plans on who to try and bring to the club.
Despite Spurs lacking space for incomings in their Europa League squad, there is a clear need for more bodies to help the club continue challenging in multiple tournaments.
Cristian Romero and Richarlison have been confirmed to be unavailable until late into January. However, with the frequency of the injuries Tottenham’s squad have suffered this season, it may benefit some players to contribute fewer minutes as they try to find fitness and form.
Consequently, defensive and attacking reinforcements of a quality that can immediately contribute in the Premier League and Europa League knockout stages, are a necessity.
According to GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham Hotspur have been actively scouting Lens 21-year-old Andy Diouf ahead of the January window.
Scouts were sent to Lens’ UEFA Conference match against Panathinaikos back in August, but did not pursue a deal before the close of the summer window.
Diouf is a versatile midfielder capable of playing as an #8 or a #10 in a similar vein to Lucas Bergvall. He leads Ligue 1 in progressive carries per 90 from midfield in addition to high percentile take-on numbers as well.
There is demonstratable value in targeting young players who are able to lead one of the top five leagues in important statistics. So there is no issue in scouting a player of Diouf’s quality. However, as stated by GiveMeSport, Tottenham’s priority is signing a defender and potentially an attacker.
The repeat injuries to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, exacerbated by Ben Davies’ injury, show that Tottenham need at least one more defender who can possibly also cover left-back, urgently.
An attacker would additionally reduce demand on Dominic Solanke and there is a hope that the arrival of Min-hyuk Yang may be able to support Brennan Johnson as well. Any scouting of Andy Diouf can hopefully be applied at a later date once these immediate necessities have been addressed.
