In a surprising sight, the Athletics continue to be busy this offseason.
The A’s acquired Jeffrey Springs from the Rays in exchange for pitchers Joe Boyle and Jacob Watters, outfielder Will Simpson and a draft pick, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Saturday. The Athletics are expected to acquire another player from Tampa Bay.
Springs began his MLB career with the Texas Rangers in 2018. The Red Sox acquired the left-hander in 2020 in exchange for Sam Travis. Springs only spent one season in Boston posting a 7.08 ERA in 20 1/3 innings with 28 strikeouts. A year later, he and Chris Mazza were traded to the Rays for Ronaldo Hernández and Nick Sogard.
The southpaw spent four years in Tampa Bay where he struggled with injuries.
Saturday’s trade for Springs marked another move for the typically low-key A’s. The Athletics signed Luis Severino to a franchise-record contract, and it seems like they might be more active after leaving Oakland.
