LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The Salvation Army has about 150 children that still need to be 'adopted' in the Angel Tree Program. The program ensures families in need can give their children presents on Christmas.
Capt. Bruce and Tavia Williams run the Angel Tree program with Salvation Army. News 10 tagged along as they shopped, as a family, for their angels, Ariana and Tyrone.
"It's been a struggle over the past few years, and there are a lot of families out there who unfortunately have to make some really tough choices at this time of year. Things like, 'Do I pay the rent and utilities and put gas in the car or have Christmas for my children?' We're excited to step into that gap and to make sure that those children have those gifts," Bruce said.
"We have people come, parents come on our distribution day, who are moved to tears because they know that they'll be able to have something for their children on Christmas morning," Bruce said.
You can adopt an angel at the Acadiana Mall, Best Buy in Lafayette, or the Salvation Army office in Lafayette.
When you are finished shopping for your angel, you can tear the top of the card off and hang it on your Christmas tree as an ornament.
"Knowing that as people are sitting at home with their own tree and they see this little tag on their tree on Christmas morning, they know that they have done something that makes someone else's child's Christmas just an amazing, memorable thing," Bruce said.
"We want them to feel that the magic of Christmas is still alive," Tavia said.
You can bring your presents to the same location you get your Angel Tree from Dec. 16 to Dec. 20. Distribution day to families will be on Dec. 21.
