Mark Lawrenson is confident that Tottenham’s clash against Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday will be a rather one-sided affair.
It is perhaps an understatement to describe Tottenham’s clash against Southampton as a must-win, with the away side not just needing three points, but also a convincing performance to take some pressure off Ange Postecoglou.
However, not many Spurs fans will feel confident heading into the game, given the injuries that the side are dealing with and their tendency to come up short in matches they are expected to win.
The one saving grace for this Tottenham side is the fact that Russell Martin’s men appear unable to compete at this level, having won just one out of their 15 Premier League matches since their promotion.
Despite all the doom and gloom surrounding Tottenham at the moment, Lawrenson believes that they will brush Southampton aside with ease on Sunday.
The pundit pointed to the Saints’ inability to score goals as the reason why they would be perfect opponents for Spurs.
When asked to predict the result of Tottenham’s trip to the South Coast, Lawrenson told Paddy Power: “Spurs will win this comfortably. Southampton can’t score, they can’t win, they’re struggling.
The thing with Tottenham is that they have really, really good spells in games – regardless of their other faults – and they score goals. We could spend all day talking about Tottenham but this might be a straightforward one. Southampton 0-3 Tottenham.”
Both Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town were winless in the Premier League when they played Tottenham and both sides managed to turn the Lilywhites over.
Additionally, Spurs’ away record makes for extremely grim reading, which is why this game might not be as straightforward as it seems on paper.
Postecoglou‘s men need to score the first goal to take some pressure off themselves and to have the confidence to start playing their football.
