San Domenico locked in a title shot at the Carl “Red” Brown Tournament with Friday’s 69-58 victory over Justin-Siena. The Panthers will play the winner of the other semifinal between Hayward and host Archie Williams in Saturday’s championship at 6:30 p.m.
San Domenico went on a 31-6 run behind six 3-pointers in the second quarter to take a commanding lead. Gavin Early led the Panthers with 14 points, nine rebounds, five steals and four assists. Kris Jakstas, Irakli Jokhadze and Omar Williams all finished with 11 points.
- Marin Catholic lost a 67-65 heartbreaker in overtime against St. Joseph during tournament action at De La Salle on Friday. The Wildcats led by five late in regulation before the Pilots rallied to force overtime, and went on to seal the win with a jumper at the buzzer. Joe Hammond led Marin Catholic with 24 points, six steals and four assists. Jake Ryan, scoreless in the first half, finished with 18 points and Theo Pontes had 13 points. Marin Catholic will play Las Lomas on Saturday in the seventh-place game.
- The Branson School (2-3) got off to a slow start and could never overcome the deficit during Friday’s 73-39 loss to Clayton Valley Charter during tournament action in Gridley. Branson beat the Ugly Eagles, 62-50, in the first round of the North Coast Section Open Division playoffs last season.
Girls basketball
Junior Brisa Briseno’s 10 points led a balanced scoring attack as San Rafael beat College Prep, 38-27, Friday night. Estefani Pantojas had eight points and led the Bulldogs (3-6) in rebounding. Sophomore Jennifer Armas chipped in six points, while Roselyn Mazariegos added five points for San Rafael.
- The Branson School tried to dig out of a hole in the second half, but fell to Montgomery, 50-35, during Friday’s tournament action in Windsor.
