ERATH, La. (KLFY) -- The residents voted 58% to pass the half-cent sales tax for the police department. Erath Police Chief Anna LaPointe is thankful for the community's support.
LaPointe said the sales tax is paid quarterly, so the benefits will not be seen immediately.
"It's going to take, you know, a few months to do that. We don't work considerably off the sales tax. We get a budget yearly. So when we get our budget, that's what reflects our department and what we can actually do," she said.
LaPointe said she is appreciative that the community got together and accepted the tax to help the Erath Police Department continue moving forward and serving the community.
“I definitely appreciate them going out and voting on Saturday,” the chief said, noting she didn't want to have to start cutting back on services which would have ultimately affected response time to calls.
"So with the sales tax, we will continue being able to serve the community," she said.
She said the half-cent sales tax will continue helping the town fund the police department.
“We're very, very honored that the town people went out and voted for the sales tax and we definitely appreciate that and now we can continue doing the services we were doing prior,” she said. “To my knowledge, the half cent sales tax is put into place and we will not have to worry about that sales tax. If it comes up that we have to renew them we'll definitely do that but I was not under the assumption that that was the case.”
