Detroit Lions season ticket holder Fahad Yousif had the opportunity of a lifetime to hold the U.S. flag during the national anthem at the team's Dec. 5 game against the Green Bay Packers. But that dream quickly went south after an altercation.
Yousif explained the evening in an interview with CBS News, describing how he became overzealous and began trash-talking some Packers players. That prompted Packers head coach Matt LaFleur to start shouting at Yousif in response as referees stepped in to hold back Yousif.
"I started trash-talking the other team, so I get that, but I really don't think getting to this level was necessarily warranted," Yousif said.
At halftime, Yousif was removed from his seat and asked to leave. Earlier this week, he received an email from the Lions informing him that his season tickets had been revoked for the on-field altercation.
Yousif is now banned from all NFL games pending the completion of an online code of conduct course that costs $250.
"It was terrible. I didn't think it was real at first," he said of the loss of privileges. "To completely revoke my tickets and never let me be a season ticket member again, it hurts. It hurts bad."
The Lions fan hopes that the situation can be rectified after receiving this punishment.
"I think all of it has been blown out of proportion and I am not trying to discredit what I did by any means," he said. "It's a shame that I won't be able to get in there and see them in person anymore."
