The Gateway of India was built by Bombay’s former Governor, Sir George Sydenham Clarke. Now, this raises the question: What was the need to build this monument?
Britain’s king George V and queen Mary were scheduled to visit India in 1911. To welcome them, the former Governor had built this monument for their visit. The Gateway of India was designed by George Wittet.
The last British troops left India by passing through the Gateway of India on February 28, 1948.
