A NETFLIX series is now gaining traction among zombie enthusiasts, with some viewers claiming it outshines the iconic The Walking Dead.
Despite flying under the radar since its 2019 debut, the show has now earned a cult following and an impressive 87 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.
Zombie fans have recently discovered Black Summer on Netflix[/caption] The show has been praised for its realistic chase scenes[/caption] Viewers have compared it to The Walking Dead[/caption]Starring Jaime King, the action-packed drama follows a woman called Rose who is desperately searching for her daughter after a zombie apocalypse tears their world apart.
Alongside a group of strangers, Rose faces relentless dangers from the undead – and from the darker sides of humanity.
Unlike other zombie series, Black Summer avoids common genre pitfalls.
The characters aren’t instant sharpshooters—missing their marks and making reckless, emotionally charged decisions that heighten the realism.
The show also sets itself apart with its intense, long one-take sequences, placing viewers directly in the action.
Fans on social media have shared their newfound obsession with the series, with one writing: “I love Black Summer. It’s got the best depiction/scariest zombies of any show or movie.”
Another added: “If you haven’t seen Black Summer yet on Netflix, it’s one of the better zombie tv series out there.
“There’s only 2 seasons but the zombies are fast and terrifying.”
Even horror legend Stephen King has sung its praises, calling the show “existential hell in the suburbs, stripped to the bone”.
He added: “No long, fraught discussions. No endless flashbacks.
“Dialogue is spare. It’s a shot of adrenaline to the heart.”
Sadly after the first two seasons aired the show was axed by Netflix in 2023, leaving fans without answers to the second season’s cliffhanger.
Co-creator John Hyams confirmed on Twitter that a third season was no longer in the works.
While fans hold out hope for another platform to resurrect the show, its abrupt ending hasn’t stopped horror lovers from diving into the series recently.
